How to Strength Train

With so much information available and so many influences from Instagram, YouTube, friends, family it can be really tough to know where to start. Here is what you NEED to know and HOW to apply it safely and effectively.


So why do strength exercises?


- Increased integrity of bone and connective tissues.

- Increased metabolism.

- Increased insulin sensitivity.

- Reduced rate of injury.

- Reduced lower back pain.

- Slowing of age-related declines like strength and bone loss.

- Prevention of osteoporosis and osteoarthritis.





There are so many ways to strength train that will work. Here is how you can start. Don’t think of only heavy Barbells you can also use

  • Exercise bands

  • Exercise machines

  • Bodyweight exercises

  • Dumbbells

  • Kettlebells

  • Sandbags

  • Medicine balls

  • Suspension straps

Look for Balance include the six major movement patterns:


  • Squat

  • Hinge

  • Single-leg or split-stance

  • Upper-body push (horizontal and vertical)

  • Upper-body pull (horizontal and vertical)

  • Core (rotation; anti-rotation; anti-extension; anti-lateral flexion; and hip flexion with neutral spine, hip, and spine extension)




Staying consistent with a supportive group or trainer, allowing enough time to recover, including variety, asking for help from those whose values align with yours will help gain long term strength.
